US media: $200 million, White House new luxury banquet hall investigated, the White House responded

[World Wide Web Report] According to a report by the Beast Daily, Robert Garcia, a Democratic member of the U.S. House Oversight Committee, revealed in an interview on the afternoon of October 2 local time that the Trump administration spent $200 million in the new banquet hall of the White House. It is under investigation by the committee.

Garcia said the House Oversight Committee is investigating whether a foreign government funded the 90,000-square-foot, gold-decorated image project, as well as other potential misconduct in the construction process, the Daily Beast said.

"Even if there were donations for part of the construction, that behemoth shouldn't have existed in the first place," Garcia said. "Who is involved? Are foreign governments paying for it? The oversight committee has set out to track down the answers to these questions and investigate what the White House has done with this project, because it's abnormal."

According to reports, Trump aides said that the banquet hall was funded by a mixture of Trump himself and donors, and construction of the banquet hall will continue during the U.S. government's "shutdown" period.

The Daily Beast asked the White House and Garcia for comment on the matter. The White House first responded by automatically replying to an email, blaming the Democratic Party for the government's "shutdown." White House spokesman Kush Desai later said in response,"Democrats are so eager to change the subject just to avoid their question of shutting down the federal government to provide more benefits to illegal immigrants." This is really surprising."

On July 31, local time, the White House issued a statement saying that it would spend about US$200 million to build a new "beautifully designed and carefully built" banquet hall at the White House, and announced a set of design drawings. The White House statement stated that this is a large-scale event space that successive U.S. presidents, government officials and White House staff have been longing for for 150 years. The project will start in September this year and is expected to be completed before the end of President Trump's term.

According to ABC News, Trump also talked about the project when he signed an executive order at the White House later on July 31, saying he hired “the best architects and engineers” to build the banquet hall and it would be “top-notch.”
