Russia says the United States has not responded to Russia's proposal to extend the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty

Russian President Peskov said on Monday that the United States has not yet responded to Russia's proposal for a new Treaty on Strategic Weapons Reduction, and Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the same day that Russia will not extend the treaty if the United States does not intend to extend the new Treaty on Strategic Weapons Reduction.

Russian Presidential Press Secretary peskov said on the 2nd that Russia and the United States have maintained contact, but the United States has not yet responded to the Russian proposal. US officials said earlier that US President Trump would personally respond to this matter, but Russia has not received a reply so far.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova said on the same day that the Russian side had not proposed a further extension of the new Treaty on Strategic Weapons Reduction in a “creative way” in whole or in part.

Putin said on the 2nd that if the United States does not extend the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, then Russia will not extend the treaty. Even if the United States agrees to extend the treaty after expiration, it will be difficult for Russia to agree to extend the treaty.

Putin said on September 22 that if the United States does not take steps to disrupt the existing balance, Russia will continue to comply with the treaty's core restrictions within a year after the expiration of the New Treaty on Strategic Weapons Reduction.Putin noted that the treaty has played an important role inining the nuclear balance for years, and its complete abandon would be a "wrong and short-sighted move."

Russia and the United States signed a new Treaty on Strategic Weapons Reduction in 2010, aimed at limiting the number of nuclear warheads and carriers deployed by the two countries, which entered into force on February 5, 2011, for a period of 10 years, and was extended by consultation until February 5, 2026.
