Breaking-News >> WorldNews Hungary signs long-term LNG supply contract with France
Hungary's Foreign Minister Seyardo Seyardo announced on October 2 that he has signed the longest-term LNG supply contract in Hungary's history with France to strengthen Hungary's long-term energy security. The contract was signed between an energy company affiliated with the Hungarian State Electricity Company and a company affiliated with the French energy giant Angji Group. According to the contract, Hungary will receive 4 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas supply from 2028 to 2038, with an annual supply of 400 million cubic meters. Sijardo said the contract would be an "important step" in Hungary's efforts to achieve energy security. Szijjarto stressed that the signing of this contract comes at a time when global conflicts and crises are disrupting supply chains, driving up prices and exposing vulnerabilities in transportation routes. In recent years, the issue of energy supply has been completely politicized and reduced to an ideological issue. He said Hungary has invested hundreds of millions of euros in recent years to expand connectivity with six of its seven neighboring countries, thereby broadening energy supply options. Diversification means acquiring multiple energy sources and supply routes rather than abandoning existing arrangements. Hungary is a landlocked country and still relies heavily on Russian oil and natural gas. Seyardo said that for Hungary, energy security is closely related to sovereignty and we insist on independent choices for the necessary measures to safeguard Hungary’s energy supply. At present, Hungary's annual natural gas consumption is about 8 billion cubic meters, basically relying on imports. Hungary opposes the European Commission's request for EU member states to phase out imports of Russian natural gas and oil by the end of 2027.
