Manchester Jewish Synagogue Attack Suspect Suicide Attacker Killed At least Two People

A serious attack occurred on a synagogue in the Kronsall district of Manchester, England on Thursday. A man suspected of carrying a suicide explosive device tried to break into the synagogue, killing at least two people and injuring many others. Police shot and knocked down the man.

The suspect was wearing a suicide belt.

From the scene, the assailant attempted to rise after falling, then a gunshot sounded and he fell again. In addition, a wounded man remained unmoving outside the synagogue door, with blood traces around his head. After the incident, a white truck marked "Bomb handling" arrived at the scene and entered the alert line to be disposed of.

Police sources said the motive for the attack could not yet be determined.

The video shows a suspect lying on the ground outside the Jewish church and armed police targeting him with a gun. A moment later, the suspect began trying to get up before the gun sounded.

The King said he and the Queen were "deeply shocked and saddened by the terrorist attacks in Manchester, especially on such an important day for the Jewish community."

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he would terminate the European Leaders’ Summit in Copenhagen in advance, return home to host a meeting of the Government Emergency Committee (COBRA) and announce that Jewish synagogues across the country would deploy more police forces.

Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, revealed that one of the victims was a police officer who was stabbed and another injured crashed next to a suspectedly damaged Kia Picanto, which completed annual inspections and paid vehicle taxes about eight weeks ago.

Police in Greater Manchester said a public alert was received Thursday at 9:31, saying a car hit a crowd near Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue and one man was stabbed. Police announced a major incident at 9:37 and shot the suspect after 1 minute. Medical personnel arrived at 9:41. Police thanked witnesses for promptly calling the police so that the attacker could not enter the synagogue.

After the incident, Royal Salford Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital, Rochdale Medical Clinic and Royal Oldham Hospital all went on lockdown.

The Hebrew Synagogue in Heaton Park, a large Eastern European Orthodox Jewish church, was founded in 1935 and led by Rabbi Daniel Walker. Witnesses say the attackers attempted to force into the synagogue before being killed by armed police.

A delivery driver recalled to BBC Manchester that the traffic on the road was blocked at that time. He found a car collision, thinking it was an ordinary accident. When he approached, he saw a man falling to the ground and bleeding. Another man tried to break into the synagogue with a knife, and the police then shot to stop it.

An armed policeman wearing a mask stood behind the line of alert.

After the attack, the streets around the hall were blocked by a large number of police cars, firefighters and ambulance personnel quickly arrived, and police helicopters patrolled the sky. Checkpoints are set up in some streets, and armed police with submachine guns are stationed on the path leading to the synagogue. Some members of the Jewish community gathered outside the cordon, and some people burst into tears. A local Jewish man said that his wife, daughter and congregation were still in the synagogue.

British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud said: "Today's attack in Manchester Synagogue shocked me, especially on the holiest holiday of Judaism. My first thought is the victims, as well as the brave police and emergency personnel."

Manchester is the UK’s most Jewish-populated city outside of London, with about 30,000 Jews. Dave Ritchie, head of the Community Security Trust, pointed out that Atonement Day is the most sacred day of the Jewish year, with a large number of religious activities throughout the national synagogue and a high level of security cooperation with the police during the festival.

Rabbi Jonathan Romain called the attack "every Jew's worst nightmare", which not only destroyed the holiest festivals, but also filled community gatherings with fear, highlighting the threat that political violence could turn into religious hatred.
