Breaking-News >> WorldNews Israeli Interception of Gaza Aid Ship Caused Protests in Latin America
On October 1, local time, demonstrations were held across Latin America in protest of Israel's intercepting a "global tough fleet" of humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip. That night, demonstrations broke out in several cities in Mexico in solidarity with compatriots who had been detained by Israel as part of the “Global Resilient Fleet” and the Mexican Foreign Ministry called on the Israeli authorities to safeguard the rights of detained Mexicans. Bogotá, the capital of Colombia, also held a large-scale demonstration that night to protest against Israel's detention of two fellow brothers participating in the flotilla. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia issued a statement firmly opposing any violation of the personal safety, freedom and human rights of Colombia citizens abroad, and reiterated its support for the Palestinian people. In a statement, the Chilean government expressed its deep concern over Israel’s interception of the “global resilient fleet”, which Chile condemned as a violation of the freedom of navigation guaranteed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and its obligations under international humanitarian law. Bolivian President Alze condemned the Israeli government’s interception as “unacceptable acts of violence” and “criminal acts.” The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry also issued a statement strongly condemning Israel’s interception as a “covert act of piracy.” The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the 1st saying that the Israeli Navy intercepted and boarded several ships in the Mediterranean that night trying to break through Israel's maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip. The statement said the Israeli army "safely intercepted" multiple ships and was transferring the people on board to Israeli ports. They would be deported when they arrived in Israel, including Swedish climate activist Greta Tunberg and her friends. Organizers of the "Global Tenacity Flotilla" said that Israeli soldiers boarded three ships in the flotilla, and one of the ships was "deliberately collided" by Israel. Israel also attacked several other ships with high-pressure water cannons. Fortunately, no casualties were caused.
