The 20th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 1 October, to elect a member of the United Nations Committee on the Prohibition of Torture. The Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1984 and officially entered into force in 1987. The United Nations Committee Against Torture is a compliance monitoring body established under the Convention. Its main functions include considering periodic reports of States parties, preparing general comments, examining communications from States parties and individuals, etc. After ratifying this Convention in 1988, China conscientiously fulfilled its obligations under the Convention, submitted implementation reports six times, and engaged in constructive dialogue with the United Nations Committee against Torture. China firmly opposes torture and will continue to comprehensively promote the rule of law, deepen judicial reform, and strengthen human rights protection.
