New York State refuses to pay for the Statue of Liberty as torch or "fire out" due to government shutdowns

On October 1st, local time, a spokesman for the office of Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York, USA, said that New York would not bear the opening operating expenses of the Statue of Liberty as it did when the government shut down before. The governor said the Statue of Liberty torch could be “completely extinguished.”

Hochul mentioned that more than 100,000 federal workers in New York have been furloughed or are at risk of furloughing, including dozens who work at the Statue of Liberty. Currently, it's unclear if and when the Statue of Liberty will close.

It is understood that during the last government shutdown in 2018, the Statue of Liberty was initially closed and turned away thousands of visitors, before reopening with state funding. (Headquarters reporter Zhao Miao)
