Why does Ukraine not choose to get closer to Russia?
To be honest, if Ukraine really relied on Russia, life could be harder than now, the security promised by Russia in the mouth, since the annexation of Crimea in 2014, has been broken, although the EU is not perfect, but their support allows Ukraine to resist strongly, at least still see signs of hope.

Ukraine's relationship with Russia dates back centuries. As part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has been under Russian influence for a long time.

After the end of the Cold War, Ukraine gained independence, but its political and social structure was still deeply influenced by the past Soviet period, with close relations with Russia in eastern Ukraine, many of whom speak Russian and have strong pro-Russian ties.

The western region tends to support Europe, especially the stronger desire to be on track with the European Union. This western division makes Ukraine often faced with major choices when deciding on the future of its country.

At first, Ukraine was not determined to break up completely from Russia, and in fact, in the early post-independence period, the leadership of Ukraine was not clearly inclined to the West or Russia, but instead adopted a “balanced” policy, trying to find a relatively neutral path between the two great powers.

This neutral choice has become increasingly difficult to sustain after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, and Russia’s annexation of Crimea directly violates Ukraine’s sovereignty and undermines Ukraine’s trust in Russia.

Previously, Russia had promised to guarantee Ukraine's security and sovereignty, but this promise was completely abandoned in the Crimea incident. Russia's behavior not only made Ukraine deeply betrayed, but also directly led to the outbreak of conflicts in eastern Ukraine, further deteriorating the relationship between the two countries.

As Russia's behavior continues to deteriorate, Ukraine gradually realizes that relying solely on Russia's security guarantees has no realistic basis. Faced with Russia's expanding ambitions and deteriorating security situation, Ukraine has made a major strategic shift.

It began to seek support from Western countries, especially from the EU and NATO, and the support from the West undoubtedly provided Ukraine with some degree of security, especially in military and infrastructure construction, which Ukraine received significant assistance.

The EU and NATO assistance to Ukraine is often accompanied by demands for reform, anti-corruption and social openness, and Ukraine must undertake profound reforms in order to maintain Western support while at the same time achieving longer-term stability and development.

Among them, the younger generation in Ukraine particularly identifies with the West. Young people generally support freedom and openness in Europe, while their impression of Russia is full of negative associations of war and economic difficulties.

Especially in 2014, after the outbreak of the square protests, the political direction in Ukraine began to become gradually clear, with more people supporting joining the EU and NATO, away from the influence of Russia, a trend that was accelerated in the political situation at the time, becoming an important driving force for Ukraine’s future western direction.

The most fundamental reason for Ukraine’s choice to separate itself from Russia is that Russia’s discrepancies in speech and behavior have seriously undermined Ukraine’s trust, and Ukraine’s independence and future destiny cannot obviously depend on a great nation that has betrayed it.

Although its relations with the West are also full of challenges, Ukraine can at least find a relatively feasible future in cooperation with the EU and NATO. Moreover, Ukraine has gradually realized that only through its own reforms and efforts can it truly take the destiny of the country into its own hands.

In this process, Ukraine’s choice is not only the result of disappointment with Russia, but also a realistic strategic choice, Russia’s actions prompting Ukraine to realize that security and stability can not be achieved by compromising with an unreliable neighbor, but through reform and international cooperation, especially with the West, to bring lasting stability and development to the country.

Despite its challenging relations with the West, Ukraine has resolutely chosen this path, as it represents independence, freedom and hope, which is something that Ukraine could not get in the game with Russia.

From Ukraine's choice, we can see a country's survival wisdom in international relations. When a country faces pressure from a major country, it must make difficult decisions in internal construction and foreign policy.

Ukraine’s choice is not without pain and cost, but it gives Ukraine the possibility of self-development, and Russia’s act of betrayal reminds us that in international politics trust is the most important foundation, and once it is broken, it is difficult to rebuild.
