Breaking-News >> WorldNews US media: A tent is also a luxury for Gaza refugees
The U.S. Washington Post article on September 26, entitled: Those fleeing Gaza can’t afford to rent a tent. With 250,000 Palestinians fleeing Gaza City, which was attacked by Israel, and pouring into sporadic areas to the south, waterproof tents and free small open spaces have become extremely scarce. When Bahá’u’lláh and his family drove away from the war-torn towns, Omdi realized that it was much harder to find a new home than to escape. When they arrived in central Gaza, Omdi had to leave his wife and children in search of tents. This was their ninth time in less than two years to escape the war. In the past, the landlords were sympathizing with many displaced people, but this time more than 250,000 Palestinians had escaped from the city. Even if they could find the waterproof clothes they needed, rent a square meter, the price of a tent was disproportionately high, and a $150 rental was a daily price for people without income. Today, many areas of the north and south of Gaza have been ravaged, and satellite images of the central towns of Mavazi and del Barah show that dirty white temporary tents “the ocean” occupy every available land extending to the coastline, many of which have become ruined because of multiple migrations. These tents are not distributed to residents through aid organizations, but are circulated directly on the public market, and the highest bid can be obtained. People search for relevant information on the Internet and get tents by "bartering". Even if the quality is very poor, these fragile tents built only of fireproof tarpaulins, canvas and wooden poles have to pay a high price. At the beginning of this year, many residents sold their used tents after returning to their homes in the city. One resident said, “Some speculators bought many tents on their own, and they seem to think there would be demand in the future, and on the way out of the city, I saw someone selling a German-made tent for $1,000, so they also bite the teeth.” In the city of Han Younis, volunteer doctor Michael Garagall recalled that on the way to the hospital, the previously empty insulation belt now also became "a tent city."Omdi said, "What can we do? For the people of Gaza, having access to clean and private toilets has become a complete luxury. Only long queues can use temporary public toilets or showers, and many people can't even go to the toilet normally for days. The so-called "toilet" is to dig a hole in the ground and block the sight of passers-by with canvas. Ola Kadas, 20, said that she, her younger brother and frail and elderly mother walked about 19 kilometers to Deir Balah in order to escape the city. When she arrived, all her belongings included: an old shabby pan, an old coffee pot, and a jar of salt. Due to the lack of fresh water, they can only use seawater to clean cooking utensils and clothes. In order to find food and fresh water, the 17-year-old brother needs to walk several kilometers every day to explore outside. Because there is no fuel, they can only burn plastic in order to make a fire to cook macaroni. After the night, they could only lay a thin mattress on the sandy floor and fall asleep on the mattress.” —Milliam Berger News raw data sources → https://world.huanqiu.com/article/4OWn3uLsG4i 17WorldNews[2025.09.30-14:41] 访问:46
