Breaking-News >> WorldNews The latest U.S. tariff policy causes industry dissatisfaction with the "tariff wall" hinders the development of U.S. companies
According to the Associated Press, the U.S. government recently announced that it will impose high tariffs on commodities such as drugs and heavy trucks, which has led to the cost of enterprises far beyond the planned scope, causing dissatisfaction of many enterprises across the United States. On October 25, US President Donald Trump announced that from October 1, the United States will impose a 100% tariff on all imported brands or patented drugs; a 50% tariff on all kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets and related products; a 30% tariff on soft furniture; and a 25% tariff on heavy trucks produced outside the United States. The Associated Press reported that Naturepedic, a famous mattress and furniture company in Cleveland, USA, originally planned to launch a high-end soft-covered headboard, but was forced to change its plan because of this new tariff policy. Alin Schultz, the chief growth officer of the company, raised a series of questions: "Should we continue to push forward the plan and hope that the situation will improve? Or admit that the high cost makes the product uncompetitive and simply give up the project? If we decide to continue to launch this product, should we bear the cost ourselves or pass it on to consumers?" Jonathan Gold, Vice President of Supply Chain and Customs Policy of the U.S. Retail Federation, said: “The substantial increase in cost of furniture, cabinets, carpenters and building materials will make the ‘ownership of a house’ in the ‘American Dream’ much more expensive. The announcement and implementation of these tariff policies continues to cause serious damage to the retail supply chain; and policy uncertainty also makes it difficult for retailers to make reasonable planning and mitigate the impact of tariffs.” According to the report, Trump also raised questions because he defended the tax on sofas and other upholstered furniture as "safeguarding national security". Mary Lovley, a senior researcher at Peterson Institute for International Economics, said: "It's hard to see what key role the cabinet industry will play in winning the next war." For decades, U.S. trade policy has been dedicated to pushing for the reduction of trade barriers globally, but a series of initiatives of the Trump administration are undermining this trade policy. Trump claimed that the tariffs would protect the U.S. industry from foreign competition shocks, pushing companies to move production back to the U.S. and increase revenue for the U.S. Treasury. Previously, Trump had threatened to impose tariffs of 200% or even higher on drugs. Barry Appleton, a senior researcher at the International Law Center of new york Law School, pointed out: "This move aims to force large pharmaceutical companies to move jobs and new factories to the United States, which is essentially an industrial policy." Analysts warned that tariffs are likely to push up drug prices, Appleton said: “The Americans who are most affected are those who need drugs urgently, especially those who don’t have a perfect health insurance plan.” News raw data sources → https://world.huanqiu.com/article/4OWb2OlX9jM 17WorldNews[2025.09.29-21:41] 访问:49
