Afghanistan releases U.S. citizen, U.S. wants dialogue to continue

The Afghan government said on September 28 that Foreign Minister Mutaqi met with a delegation led by U.S. President’s Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs Adam Berler on the same day and announced the release of a U.S. citizen.

Afghan government deputy spokesman Hamdallah Fittrat said in a statement on social media that Mutaqi said the release of American citizen Amir Amir earlier that day was a “positive step” reflecting the government’s insistence on depolitization in dealing with foreign affairs.

Mutaki also thanked Qatar for its role in facilitating the Armenian exchange of prisoners.

The statement said Berler welcomed the decision, calling it a “certain moment” and said the previous round of dialogue was “constructive” and hoped to continue to communicate on such issues in the future.

U.S. Secretary of State rubio posted a message on social media on the same day, confirming the news and also thanking Qatar.

Since the beginning of this year, Afghanistan and the United States have continued diplomatic interactions on prisoner exchange. In January this year, Afghanistan released two Americans in exchange for the release of one Afghan by the United States. In March this year, Burrell led a delegation to visit Afghanistan, which led to the release of an American citizen who had been detained for more than two years. On the 19th of this month, Afghanistan released an old couple who had been detained for nearly eight months.
