General Secretary of Cuba Women’s Federation: Beijing Women’s Federation is an important turning point in promoting global gender equality

Xinhua News Agency, Havana, September 27 (Reporter Jiang Biao) Teresa Amarele, general secretary of the Cuban Women's Federation, said in Havana, Cuba, on the 27th that the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women (Beijing World Conference on Women) held in 1995 was unprecedented in scale and was an important turning point in promoting global gender equality. Against the background of the increasingly complex international situation and the approaching goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it is more practical to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Beijing World Conference on Women.

On the same day, the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Beijing World Women's Conference, jointly sponsored by the Cuban Women's Federation, the National Congress of People's Power of Cuba, the United Nations Association of Cuba and many United Nations agencies in Cuba, was held at the Jose Marti International School of Journalism in Havana. Amarele attended the event and delivered a speech. She introduced that over the years, Cuba has always aimed at social justice, promoted the construction of gender equality system, and significantly improved the social status of Cuban women.

In his speech, China’s Ambassador to Cuba, Xi Jinping, recalled the importance of the Women’s Congress in Beijing and China’s practices and achievements in promoting women’s development over the past 30 years, especially in the new era. He stressed that China is actively involved in the development of global women’s cause and supports the UN to prioritize women’s work. Cuba is also at the forefront of gender equality and the protection of women’s rights and interests, and looks forward to sharing Cuba’s experience at the upcoming Global Women’s Summit and contributing to the success of the conference.

The Beijing Declaration and the Action Programme remain the most comprehensive, most forward-looking and progressive action plans to promote the rights of women and girls worldwide, according to the UN Coordinator in Cuba, Francesco Pichon. Beijing is about to hold another Global Women’s Summit. The United Nations highly recognizes China’s active cooperation with countries to jointly write a new chapter to promote the development of the global cause of women.
