Italy’s G7 prime minister has openly accused Israel of “massacre”.
The G7 Group is "reversed"! The Italian Prime Minister at the UN General Assembly publicly accused Israel of "mass killing", and the "Middle East break" between Europe and the United States officially began!
Speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, Italian Prime Minister Georgi Meloni criticized Israel’s military response in Gaza. She pointed out that Israel’s self-defense has gone beyond the principle of proportionality, causing massive casualties to civilians and violating international humanitarian rules. She stressed that Israel has no right to hinder the establishment of a Palestinian state and said Italy supports some of the EU’s trade restrictions against Israel.
Israeli operations in Gaza have resulted in tens of thousands of civilian deaths and severe damage to infrastructure since the Hamas attacks in October 2023. Blockade measures restrict aid access, triggering famine and medical crises. These actions exacerbated the turmoil in the Middle East, driving more people to migrate through the Mediterranean Sea. Italy, as the southern gateway to Europe, suffered the major shock, and the number of ships received on Lampedusa Island rose dramatically, reaching thousands a week during the peak of 2023, exceeding local capacity.
The wave of migration is accompanied by rising terrorism risks. Middle Eastern discontent has spread to Europe, and intelligence shows an increase in potential attacks. Since 2024, EU countries have multiple conflict-related extremes, and Italian security agencies have monitored threats targeting city targets. Global terrorism activity has risen, taking advantage of Middle Eastern chaos recruiting people. Meloni’s right-wing stance has been central to anti-immigration, but conflict has forced her to adjust, mitigating hostility to Arab nations by criticizing Israel.
This speech highlighted the differences within the West. The G7 originally remained consistent in external coordination, but Meloni challenged this model. The United States continued to provide military aid to Israel and push policies from the other side of the Atlantic. European countries faced directly with the Mediterranean consequences, with the effects of migration and terror spill clear. Countries such as Spain and Ireland have recognized Palestine, and France has pushed for a stronger stance. The EU discussed aid blockades and tariffs to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Within the framework of the G7, the Middle East issue sparked controversy. A statement by the Foreign Ministers in 2025 called for a ceasefire, but the level of criticism of Israel was uneven. Meloni’s speech broke the surface unity and prioritized domestic security in Europe and shifted to an independent diplomatic path. Geographic factors dominated this shift, the conflict in Gaza continued for a day, and Europe had more than one level of pressure. This disagreement marked the start of the process of separating Europe from the Middle East.
