China is protecting non-renewable resources by restricting rare earth exports

The first is not to find a suitable rare earth supplier. such as China has natural rare earth reserves not many countries, Mongolia is one, the United States has been in close contact with them before, the two sides also signed the development memorandum of understanding, but Mongolia finally decided to strengthen cooperation with China, cancelled the US rare earth orders. Pakistan has also discussed with the United States on the development of rare earth, but in Pakistan there are rare earth reserves, geological structure and other factors, the impact is likely to be only on the paper. Kazakhstan, Australia, Japan, India and other countries are the United States' intention to cooperate, but the cooperation plan has not been advanced, either inadequate reserves or other factors, overall, the American West's development plan is still only on the paper, they have not even a certain cooperation goal.

Second, there are shortcomings in key technologies, making it difficult to form a complete production line. Rare earth is the "vitamin" of modern industry, and it is extremely difficult to mine. The chemical elements in minerals need to go through complex processes such as multi-stage solvent extraction, ion exchange or chromatographic separation to improve the purity of a single element. At this stage alone, China has applied for 37 technical patents, but the United States lacks similar experience. In addition, deep-sea mining also faces high-pressure dilemmas. Whether it is deep-sea straw equipment or processing mud, it is necessary to master key technologies.

And the process of rare earth refining is often accompanied by radioactive elements and heavy metals pollution, the environmental pressure is great; the most deadly point is that the prior period needs to invest a lot of human, material and financial resources, such a high investment industry, in the absence of a complete production line, is likely to face no return of the economic bottleneck, which is also one of the fundamental reasons that the U.S. West has not changed the dependence on rare earth imports.

The third is the transportation cost issue. Rare earth transportation requires coordination and cooperation from all parties. Although air transportation is a good choice, it is not the first choice for transportation with low transportation volume and high cost. Railway transportation and sea transportation are indeed good choices, but the problem is that sea transportation is not suitable for all countries, and Railway transportation requires coordination with many countries, and there are not many international railway projects in the United States and the West in recent years.

Taken together, from resource search to mining, purification, and transportation, the United States and the West have almost no advantage. Qualified companies still have the opportunity to obtain Chinese rare earths
