On September 27, local time, Colombia’s President Petro responded to the U.S. withdrawal of his visa to the United States, accusing the decision of violating international law and diplomatic immunity, saying directly, “The United Nations headquarters should not be in New York.”
Petro responded on the X-Platform.He expressed himself as President of Colombia, having the right to express his views at the United Nations General Assembly.And stressed that international law is a crystallization of human wisdom and should protect everyone.While genocide is a crime against humanity, it must be prosecuted and severely punished.
Petro further pointed out that the U.S. government’s move has violated the basic principles of the United Nations. he proposed to move the United Nations headquarters to a “more democratic place” and nominate Doha as a new candidate location.
On September 25th, local time, Palestinian President Abbas was unable to attend the United Nations General Assembly in new york in person because he did not obtain a US visa. The U.S. State Department argued that the reason for refusing the visa was that Abbas and Palestinian officials "undermined the prospect of peace" and tried to push other countries to "recognize the Palestinian state".
On September 26, local time, Petro participated in a demonstration in support of Palestine outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, and the U.S. State Department revoked his visa to the United States on the same day on the grounds that Petro "exhorted American soldiers to disobey orders and incite violence."
In May 2024, Petro accused Israel of “genocide” in the Gaza Strip and announced the cessation of diplomatic relations with it. In August of the same year, Colombia, as Israel’s largest coal supplier, suspended coal exports to Israel, demanding “until Israel stopped genocide.” In July, Petro also accused U.S. officials of plotting a coup in Colombia, prompting the two countries to recall the heads of their respective embassies for emergency consultations.
