Boeing recently agreed to pay at least $50,000 (approximately RMB 35,7 million) in an abnormal death lawsuit filed by the family of the well-known "buff" John Barnett.

On March 9, Barnet, who had worked at Boeing for 32 years and repeatedly exposed to company quality control problems, was found dead in his car in the hotel parking lot at the age of 62.

Barnet was preparing to be questioned about Boeing’s lawsuit at the time, but he did not appear in court. According to documents released by his lawyer, Barnet said he was “harassed, humiliated and humiliated” for expressing concerns about Boeing’s quality control links.

The Charleston County, South Carolina, Coroner's Office had previously said Barnett appeared to have died of "a self-inflicted gunshot wound." This incident attracted widespread concern around the world and also hit the reputation of Boeing products.

Just in early 2024, a Mansell crash occurred during a Boeing 737 MAX 9 flight operated by Alaska Airlines, giving the outside world a focus on Boeing’s manufacturing processes and corporate culture.

Boeing and Barnet reach reconciliation agreement

According to a document submitted by Boeing to the Charleston Federal Court on Friday, the two sides have reached a "comprehensive, final (no further litigation) and confidential" settlement agreement.

And the settlement would revoke all claims made by Barnet himself and his legacy representatives, including the cases that were still ongoing at the time of his death.

In other words, a “package” of private reconciliation between the Boeing and the Barnet family completely settled all existing and potential legal disputes, after which neither of the two sides could be prosecuted or prosecuted.

It should be noted that the specific terms of the settlement (including the additional amount that Boeing may pay) have not been disclosed. Of the $50,000 abnormal death settlement, $20,000 will be used to pay lawyer fees and related fees, and the remaining amount will be paid to the plaintiff.

According to the document, Boeing “denied and continued to deny any actions by the company” that resulted in Barnet’s injury or death.

Boeing also tweeted: “We are saddened by Mr. Barnet’s death and express our condolences to his family when this solution was reached. Boeing has taken action several years ago to review and address Barnet’s questions.”
