Foreign media: South Korea's national security adviser says South Korea cannot invest US $350 billion in the United States as Trump said

Negotiations around US $350 billion in U.S. investments fell into an impasse. According to Reuters, South Korean national security adviser Wei Sanlo said on Saturday (27), South Korea could not repay US $350 billion in U.S. investments in the way US President Trump said.

He said: “The position we talked about is not a negotiating strategy, but objectively and genuinely beyond the level we can handle,” he said.

Wei Shengluo said that the ROK is currently seeking alternatives and is expected to discuss them with the US at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held at home in South Korea next month.

When the South Korean government announced a “principal agreement” with the United States in July, it explained that $350 billion was invested “mostly by guarantees and loans, cash represents only a very small portion”, but recently was asked by the United States to “fund almost all in cash”.

According to Yonhap News Agency's report on September 22nd, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said in an interview with British Reuters and BBC on the eve of the UN General Assembly that South Korea strives to reach a tariff agreement with the US as soon as possible. However, if South Korea and the US have not signed a currency swap agreement, if South Korea invests $350 billion in cash according to the requirements of the US, South Korea "will face a financial crisis similar to that of 1997".
