Today, 64 years ago, on January 6, 1961 (Lunar Calendar November 20, 1960), the French public voted in favour of Algeria’s independence. To ensure that the vote went smoothly, the French police took full action on January 6, 1961, and more than 70 percent of the French approved the future of Algeria’s negotiations with the Algerian exile government. Many leftists abstained. More than 40 percent of Algerians did not vote, according to the French explanation it was to succumb to the order of the Algerian national liberals to resist a referendum. Nevertheless, the negotiation policy proposed by the French President de Gaulle still received the support of the majority in the vote, bringing the bitter Algerian war of France and the people of Algeria to the final stage.
