Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Dams collapse in the Netherlands, causing floods
In 1916, the Dutch government began preparing a dam to isolate the Dutch Sea and the North Sea, attempting to eliminate the water within the Dutch Sea and develop the area into an agricultural zone. January 14, 1916 The Dutch Dutch Sea Dam collapsed, causing floods. In order to survive and develop, the Dutch tried their best to protect the originally small land and avoid "extinction" at high tide. They fought with the sea for a long time and reclaimed land from the sea. As early as the 13th century, dams were built to block seawater, and then the water in the cofferdam was drained by pneumatic waterwheels. For hundreds of years, the sea dams built in the Netherlands are 1,800 kilometers long, increasing the land area by more than 600,000 hectares. From the late 1920s to the early 1930s, the Dutch implemented the world-famous Zudehai Project and Delta Project. It took six years to build a 32-kilometer-long dam, cutting Zudehai from the North Sea and turning it into a lake. Because the river water has to pass through this lake into the sea, and the seawater is constantly desalinated, Xudehai gradually becomes a freshwater lake and finally transforms into land. The last dam of the Delta Project was completed in 1986. After more than half a century, the whole project connected several islands, closed several river estuaries, and successfully kept the sea water out of the country. Today, 20% of the land of the Netherlands is reclaimed.
