On March 18, 1926, the Northern District Committee of the Communist Party of China organized more than 5,000 people from more than 60 groups and more than 80 schools, including the Beijing Federation of Trade Unions and the Student Federation, to hold the "National Assembly against the Ultimatum of the Eight Nations" in front of Tiananmen Square to protest Japanese warships invading Dagukou and bombarding the National Army, and denouncing the crimes of eight countries including Britain, the United States and Japan unreasonably giving China ultimatums. The conference decided to send a telegram to the whole country to unanimously oppose the ultimatum of the eight countries, expel the ministers of the eight countries, and abolish all unequal treaties; Withdraw foreign warships and telegram the national army to fight against imperialist aggression. After the meeting, the masses went to Duan Qirui to petition the government. When the team came to the front of the State Council of the Duan government, they were shot and slashed by ambushed military police platoons, killing 47 people and injuring more than 200 others on the spot. Li Dazhao and Chen Qiaonian, heads of the Northern District Committee of the Communist Party of China, were both injured. After the tragedy, schools in Beijing went on strike to hold memorial services for the martyrs who died. On March 20th, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China published the "Letter to the People of the whole country for Duan Qirui's Massacre of the People", calling on "businessmen, students, workers, farmers and soldiers of the whole country to unite in an emergency, work together regardless of party, and launch a movement greater than the May 30th Movement, so as to avoid the shame of ultimatum". On March 23rd, more than 10,000 students from Beijing Federation of Trade Unions, All-China Student Federation and other organizations and schools held the "Memorial Meeting for the Martyrs who died on March 18th" in the Third Hospital of Peking University.
