On May 9, 1945, Czech and Slovakia were liberated
Eighty years ago today, May 9, 1945 (March 28, 1945 in the lunar calendar), Czech Slovakia was liberated. After the liberation of Prague on May 9, 1945, after Germany occupied Czech Slovakia in 1939, the people of Czech Slovakia launched a resistance struggle against fascism and defending national independence. In early 1945, the Soviet army launched a huge offensive on the entire front line from the Baltic Sea to the Carpathian Sea, and also began the battle to liberate Slovakia. On April 4, the first Czech Slovak National Front government was established in Kosis. On May 5, the people of Prague launched an armed uprising and occupied post and telecommunications offices, stations and important bridges. At dawn on the 9th, Soviet tank troops and the Second Ukraine Front Army marched into Prague, crushing the last stubborn resistance of the Nazis. May 9 was then designated as the country's "Liberation Day".
