March 21, 1927 Chiang Kai-shek occupied Shanghai
On this day, 98 years ago, March 21, 1927 (February 18, 1927, the lunar calendar), Chiang Kai-shek occupied Shanghai. The U.S. Navy in shiny white military uniforms returned to Nanjing after suppressing the riots. On March 21, 1927, Chiang Kai-shek led the Kuomintang army to successfully complete the march north from Guangzhou and entered Shanghai today. Due to the hasty withdrawal of the Shandong army, Chiang Kai-shek's army barely fired a shot. Chiang intended to achieve the complete reunification of north and south of China, so the occupation of Shanghai was a big step forward for him. In the past few days, when Chiang Kai-shek attacked Shanghai, agitators had been throwing life in Shanghai into chaos. These agitators were obviously Communists. The general strike was announced today in the commercial center of China. Shanghai's foreign activity areas have been largely free of unrest. An international naval fleet is anchored not far from the shore, and 20,000 foreign armed forces patrol Shanghai. Most of them were British soldiers, but there were also 4000 U.S. Marines and sailors, and even fewer Japanese and French troops. The situation in China became more chaotic, and Chiang's earlier occupation of Wuhan created a wider rift between Chiang Kai-shek's supporters in the Kuomintang and the Communists. Recently it was revealed that the Communist Party was planning a coup in Hankou.
