After the May 4th Movement, a wave of boycotts of Japanese goods began, causing dissatisfaction among the owners of Japanese shopping malls. Some shop owners colluded with the Japanese to beat students, injuring two people. In response, students and all walks of life strongly protested. On the 24th, Tianjin authorities arrested more than 10 students and representatives of federations of all walks of life for inspecting Japanese goods, and also seized up the student federations and federations of all walks of life. On the 29th, more than 5000 students from Tianjin, under the leadership of Zhou Enlai, petitioned the provincial office, demanding the release of the arrested representatives and unsealing the seal for the student federation and federations of all walks of life. The petitioning students were once again suppressed by the military and police, and more than 50 people were injured. Representatives Zhou Enlai, Guo Longzhen, Zhang Ruoming and other people were arrested. On February 1, students from various schools began to strike classes. On the 2nd, the National Federation of All walks of life and others called for release and arrest. Under pressure from the whole country, the reactionary authorities released Zhou Enlai and other representatives from all walks of life who were arrested on July 17. On the day they were released from prison, representatives from all walks of life in Tianjin welcomed them, and Zhou Enlai reported the situation in prison to everyone.
