Fifty-seven years ago today, on May 12th, 1968 (April 16th, 1968 in the lunar calendar), Xiao Chuanjiu, a modern Chinese sculptor, died. Xiao Chuanjiu (1914 ~ 1968), a modern Chinese sculptor. He was born in Changsha, Hunan Province on January 19, 1914, and died in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province on May 12, 1968. I lost my father when I was young, and my family was poor. In July, 1927, he was admitted to Hangzhou Art College. During his school years, he participated in the Woodcut Suzuki Carving Research Association, and his woodcut Negotiation was collected by Lu Xun. After being hunted by the Kuomintang for his progressive activities, he was forced to travel east to Japan in 1933, studied sculpture in the Art Department of Japan University in Tokyo, and studied portrait painting from Takeji Fujishima, which made him lay a solid foundation in sculpture and drawing. During his stay in Japan, he had sculptures such as "Self-Statue" and "Female Body". He was selected into the Tokyo Second Academy twice (23 ~ 24 times) and was rewarded by the school. He returned to China in April 1937 and engaged in anti-Japanese propaganda work in his hometown. In 1939, he was hired to teach in Kunming. In 1941, a large-scale relief "Anti-Japanese War in Front, Production in Rear" was made in Hengyang, Hunan Province. In 1943, he held a solo sculpture exhibition in Hengyang. In 1946, he was hired back to Hangzhou Academy of Fine Arts as an associate professor of sculpture department. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xiao Chuanjiu was appointed as the head and professor of the sculpture department of East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. From 1953 to 1956, he participated in the sculpture creation of the relief of the Monument to the People's Heroes in Beijing, and made a large relief "August 1st Nanchang Uprising". In the meantime, he cooperated with Su Hui and Fu Tianqiu in "Ten Years of Hiroshima Bombing", participated in the art exhibition of the World Youth Festival, and was collected by the National Art Museum of China; He also made a bronze sculpture "Sitting Statue of Lu Xun" and a stone bust for Lu Xun's tomb in Shanghai. In 1957, he made a large sculpture "Mine Warfare". In 1962, he published Xiao Chuanjiu's Portrait Sketch Collection. Xiao Chuanjiu was the director of China Artists Association and the vice chairman of Zhejiang Branch of Artists Association.
