February 7, 1923 Beijing-Han railway workers strike
102 years ago today, February 7, 1923 (December 22, 1922, the 1922 lunar calendar), the Beijing-Han railway workers went on strike. The opening ceremony held during the partial completion of the Beijing-Han Railway was held on February 7, 1923. It was a memorable day in the history of China's labor movement. On February 1, 1923, Beijing-Han railway workers held the inaugural meeting of the Beijing-Han Railway Federation of Trade Unions in Zhengzhou. However, on the eve of the meeting, Wu Peifu, the direct warlord, ordered that the meeting be banned. The workers expressed great indignation at the warlord's unreasonable actions and decided to convene the founding meeting as usual. On February 1, Wu Peifu sent military and police to surround the venue. Delegates to the conference who arrived in Zhengzhou broke through the obstruction of the military and police, entered the venue, and announced the official establishment of the Beijing-Han Railway Federation of Trade Unions. Within 15 minutes of the meeting, a conflict broke out with the military police. After the meeting, the reactionary military and police surrounded the residences of the representatives, monitored their movements, occupied, closed, and destroyed the venues of the Federation of Trade Unions and the Zhengzhou Branch, and the representatives were forced to leave the country. That night, the Federation of Trade Unions decided to strike all the Beijing-Han Railway on February 4, proposing "fight for freedom and human rights!" In order to facilitate the command of this strike, the Federation of Trade Unions moved to Hankou Jiangan. Starting from 9 a.m. on February 4, tens of thousands of workers across the road went on strike in just three hours. All passenger cars, trucks, and military vehicles were stopped, and the Beijing-Han Railway was immediately paralyzed. On February 7, warlord Wu Peifu finally killed him. Xiao Yaonan, the governor of Hubei Province, used the pretext of mediating the labor unrest to lure trade union representatives into "negotiating" at the Jiang 'an Trade Union Club. On the way to the trade union office, the trade union representatives were shot by the reactionary army. More than 30 people were killed and more than 200 injured on the spot. The reactionary army also broke into the workers 'dormitories and carried out extensive searches, resulting in the "February 7th" tragedy that shocked China and abroad. After Lin Xiangqian, chairman of the Jiang 'an Branch and a member of the Communist Party, was arrested, reactionary military police tied him to a telephone pole and used a knife to force him to order the resumption of work. Lin Xiangqian shouted: "I have to order the General Federation of Trade Unions to go to work. I can't go to work!" He would rather die than surrender and die heroically. Shi Yang, legal adviser to the Wuhan Federation of Industrial Unions and Communist Party members, was also brutally killed. After the tragedy, although reactionary warlords tied up workers everywhere and used terrorist means to force them to return to work. However, the workers persisted in the struggle and resolutely refused to return to work until they received an order from the Federation of Trade Unions to resume work. Trade unions in various places also refused to negotiate individually. The strike struggle lasted until February 9. In order to avoid unnecessary sacrifices, preserve strength, and prepare for a greater struggle in the future, the Wuhan Federation of Workers 'Unions of the Beijing-Han Railway Federation reluctantly ordered the resumption of work, and the general strike came to an end. In this struggle, more than 50 workers across Jinghan Road were killed, hundreds were injured, and more than 1000 people were arrested and forced into exile. Then, warlords across the country also adopted high-pressure policies against the workers 'movement, and the climax of the country's first strike was forced to temporarily turn into a low tide.
