On this day 205 years ago, on January 29, 1820 (December 14, 1819 lunar calendar), King George III of England died. George III George III (June 4, 1738 - January 29, 1820) was King of England and Ireland, Elector of Hanover (later King), the third monarch of the Hanover dynasty of England. Grandson of George II, who ascended the throne in 1760 until his death in 1820 at the age of 81. In 1751, his father Louis succeeded him as Prince of Wales after his death, and his mother, Princess Augusta of Wales, began to raise him as king. In 1760, after the death of his grandfather George II, he was crowned King of England and Elector of Hanover, known as George III. He was one of the longest-reigning kings in British history. During his reign, after wars with post-revolutionary France and Napoleon, England rose to the top of the world power. In 1783, the British army was continuously defeated in North America, and was forced to sign the Treaty of Paris with the United States, recognizing the independence of the United States. George III's prestige was reduced to a minimum, so that he wanted to abdicate. In 1788, the British established the New South Wales Colony in Australia. George III's later years were extremely bleak, suffering from blindness and paranoia. In 1810, his most beloved young daughter, Princess Amelie, died. In 1811, George III relapsed.
