On this day, 42 years ago, on January 6, 1983 (November 23, 1982, the lunar calendar), Yang Yong, deputy chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, passed away. Yang Yong (1912-1983) was born in August 1912 into a peasant family in Wenjia City, Liuyang County, Hunan Province. Joined the Communist Party of China in February 1930. In the same year, he joined the Red Army of Workers and Peasants of China. Ren, a political commissar of the 10th Regiment of the 4th Division of the 3rd Red Army Corps, participated in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th anti-"encirclement and suppression" struggles in the Central Base Area. During the Long March, he led his troops to charge into the battle and fought heroically, fighting Tucheng, Loushanguan, Zunyi, Laoya Mountain, and crossing Chishui four times. The Anti-Japanese War participated in the Pingxingguan War. In May 1940, he served as commander of the 343rd Brigade of the 115th Division and commander of the Luxi Military Region. In 1945, he served as commander of the Seventh Column. In 1948, he participated in the Battle of Wandong, Zhengzhou, and Huaihai Campaign. In February 1949, he served as commander of the Fifth Corps of the Second Field Army. In January 1950, Yang Yong became chairman of the People's Government of Guizhou Province and commander of the Guizhou Military Region. In April 1953, he participated in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, and successively served as Commander of the 12th Corps of the China People's Volunteer Army, Third Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the Volunteer Army, and Commander of the Volunteer Army. In 1955, he was awarded the rank of general of the People's Liberation Army of China, and was awarded the First Class Eighth Medal, the First Class Medal of Independence and Freedom, and the First Class Liberation Medal. After returning to China in October 1958, he was appointed commander of the Beijing Military Region of the People's Liberation Army of China. In October of the following year, he served as deputy chief of staff and commander of the Beijing Military Region. He was framed and persecuted during the Cultural Revolution. In May 1972, Yang Yong was appointed deputy commander of the Shenyang Military Region. In August 1975, he served as Commander of the Xinjiang Military Region and Second Secretary of the Military Region Party Committee. In August 1977, he was elected as a member of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. In September of the same year, he was transferred to the post of Deputy Chief of Staff, Third Secretary of the Party Committee of the General Staff Headquarters, Member of the Military Commission of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Standing Committee Member. In September 1982, he was elected as a member of the 12th Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Secretariat at the 12th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
