He was shot by a man when he returned to his campaign office near Nagasaki City's Central Station. He died on April 18. Kazuo Ito is 61 years old. He was first elected mayor of Nagasaki City in 1995. He is currently about to end his third four-year term as mayor and is running for a fourth term as mayor of Nagasaki City. The attacker was a member of Japan's largest criminal organization, the Yamaguchi Group. Police are not sure whether the attack was related to political stance. However, at the time of Japan's local elections, the murdered Mayor Ito has always held an anti-war and anti-nuclear stance. Right-wing violence threats and blocking of political freedom have once again become hot spots in Japanese public opinion.
