Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On January 9, 1972, the architect Liang Sicheng passed away
On this day, 53 years ago, on January 9, 1972 (November 23, 1971, the lunar calendar), architect Liang Sicheng passed away. Liang Sicheng was the eldest son of Liang Qichao, one of the main advocates of the "Reform Movement of 1898" in modern history of my country. He was a famous architect in my country. Before liberation, he served in the "China Construction Society", the first academic group in the history of China to study traditional architecture, and was engaged in scientific research on China's ancient architecture. After the liberation of the country, he participated in the architectural design of the Monument to the People's Heroes. Also, the national emblem of our People's Republic of China was jointly designed by him and his wife Lin Huiyin. On the eve of the founding of the People's Republic of China, on July 10, 1949, the Preparatory Committee of the New Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference published an announcement in major newspapers such as the People's Daily to publicly solicit the national flag, national emblem and national anthem. At that time, Liang Sicheng was a consultant to the National Flag and National Emblem Selection Committee. In addition, he and his wife Lin Huiyin were both heads of the National Emblem Design Group of Tsinghua University. At the end of the solicitation for the national emblem, more than 900 design patterns were received, but none were selected. The CPPCC Preparatory Committee decided to hand over the task of designing the national emblem to Tsinghua University and the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Liang Sicheng and his wife carefully analyzed the collected national emblem materials and first clarified the difference between the national emblem and a trademark. They believed that the national emblem was a symbol of a country and should reflect the history of a nation, the will of a country, and the opinions of a political party. China's national emblem must have the characteristics of China, the characteristics of political power, and the form must also be solemn and rich, and must show the pride of the China people. After months of fighting day and night, the national emblem was finally born. However, Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin both fell ill the day before the final evaluation and had to ask their secretaries to participate in the selection work. The selection meeting was held in Huairentang, Zhongnanhai. Premier Zhou Enlai also participated in this national emblem selection meeting. He and the judges carefully reviewed the two national emblem patterns designed by the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Tsinghua University team led by Liang Sicheng and his wife, and had serious discussions. Finally, everyone unanimously agreed to adopt the pattern designed by Liang Sicheng and his wife, but also put forward some revision suggestions, requiring that the official drawings be drawn within a day or two and sent to the CPPCC plenary session for review. Based on the opinions of Premier Zhou and the National Emblem Selection Committee, Liang Sicheng and his wife organized the Tsinghua National Emblem Group to redraw the large national emblem pattern in two days, and wrote a description of the national emblem pattern below the plate: The content of the national emblem is the national flag, Tiananmen Square, gears and wheat ears, symbolizing the great revolutionary journey of the Chinese people from the new-democratic revolutionary struggle since the May 4th Movement to the birth of New China under the people's democratic dictatorship based on the alliance of workers and peasants led by the working class. On June 23, 1950, the second session of the first session of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference was held. At the meeting, at the proposal of Chairman Mao Zedong, all representatives stood up and applauded the national emblem design designed by Liang Sicheng and his wife. On September 20, 1950, Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Central People's Government, issued an order to announce the national emblem. He died on January 9, 1972.
