Thirty years ago today, on January 1, 1995 (December 1, 1994 lunar calendar), the World Trade Organization was established. Director-General Sutherland struck the closing gavel at the International Conference Centre in Geneva January 1, 1995, the World Trade Organization (WorldTrade WTO) to replace the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) established in 1947. "General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade", that is, the Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, is a multilateral international agreement on tariff and trade policy. It emerged at the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the International Conference on Trade and Employment held in Geneva on April 10, 1947 and came into force provisionally on January 1, 1948. The purpose of the "General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade" is to deal with the relationship between the trade and economic undertakings of the members of the organization, with the purpose of improving living standards, ensuring full employment, guaranteeing huge and sustained growth in real income and effective demand, expanding the full use of world resources, and developing commodity production and exchange. Strive to reach mutually beneficial agreements, substantially reduce tariffs and other trade barriers and political discrimination in international trade. The "General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade" has 8 rounds of global multilateral trade negotiations. In the Uruguay Round negotiations that ended in 1993, it was decided to establish the World Trade Organization to uniformly implement the Uruguay Round package agreement. The WTO was established to replace the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade; it is responsible for managing the implementation of the Uruguay Round package agreement. There are currently more than 130 members of the WTO.
