On this day 73 years ago, on February 5, 1952 (January 10, 1952 in the lunar calendar), the Chinese Character Reform Research Committee was established in Beijing. On February 5, 1952, the Chinese Character Reform Committee was established in Beijing. After the founding of New China, the Party Central Committee and the State Council proposed to the people of the whole country the three major tasks of character reform, namely, simplifying Chinese characters, promoting Putonghua, and formulating and implementing Hanyu Pinyin plans. The Chinese Character Reform Committee published the "Chinese Character Simplification Plan (Draft) " in 1955, and in 1964 compiled and printed the "Simplified Character General Table" as a norm for the use of simplified characters. The "General Table" has a total of 2,238 simplified characters, and a total of 2,264 traditional characters have been simplified.
