January 9, 1989 Midland Airlines Boeing 737 crash
On this day, 36 years ago, on January 9, 1989 (December 2, 1988 in the lunar calendar), the British Midland Airlines Boeing 737 crashed. On January 9, 1989, less than a month after the Lockerbie disaster, the United Kingdom experienced another tragic aviation tragedy on January 9, 1989. A Boeing 737 passenger plane flying from London to Belfast crashed in Leicestershire. The 12-week-old passenger plane suffered engine failure just 15 seconds after taking off from the runway of the East Midlands Airport. During an emergency landing, it accidentally crashed into the roadbed of the highway. Initial reports suggested that the accident may have been caused by the pilot mistakenly shutting down the engine that should not have been turned off.
