On May 3, 1989, Taiwan allowed faculty and staff to visit relatives in the mainland
Thirty-six years ago today, on May 3, 1989 (March 28, 1989 lunar calendar), Taiwan opened the door for faculty and staff to visit relatives in the mainland. On May 3, 1989, Taiwan's "Ministry of Education" announced that it would accept applications for faculty and staff to visit relatives in the mainland during winter and summer vacations from now on. It is also stipulated that all applications will be submitted to the International Committee of the Red Cross and then transferred to Taiwan's "Ministry of Internal Affairs Entry and Exit Administration" for verification. Those allowed to visit relatives are mainly public school personnel below the intermediate level, and ordinary faculty and staff of colleges and universities. Principals of colleges and universities, deans of independent colleges, all personnel of military and police colleges, and personnel entrusted by government agencies to engage in military research cannot apply to visit relatives in the mainland. Staff visits to relatives are limited to winter and summer vacations. Visits to diseases and funerals can be applied at any time, but a diagnosis certificate or death certificate must be attached. And employees of the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine can visit relatives without restrictions on winter and summer vacations.
