Breaking-News >> TodayHistory January 29, 1934 German chemist Haber passed away
91 years ago today, on January 29, 1934 (December 15, 1933 lunar calendar), German chemist Haber died. Fritz Haber 1868-1934, a world-famous German physical chemist at the beginning of this century and the inventor of synthetic ammonia. Haber was born on December 9, 1868, to a Jewish merchant family in Brislau, Germany (now Wlaucław, Poland). In 1906, Haber became a professor of chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe. In 1911, he was appointed director of the Wilhelm Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in the suburbs of Berlin, and he also served as a professor at the University of Berlin. In January 1915, the German army, on the advice of Haber, placed cylinders containing oxygen at the front of the position and used the wind to blow chlorine gas towards the enemy. The first field test was a success. On April 22 of that year, in the Battle of Yprey launched by the Germans, on a 6-kilometer-wide forward position, the Germans released 180 tons of chlorine gas in 5 minutes. It is estimated that about 15,000 British and French troops were poisoned. This was the beginning of the first large-scale use of lethal agents in modern chemical warfare in military history. 1918 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to German chemist Haber. Died on January 29, 1934 in Switzerland. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/14b5.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.28-10:05] 访问:87
