On May 9, 1944, the month-long siege of Sevastopol ended, and the city of the Crimean fortress returned to the Soviet Union. A Nazi defense force held the Soviet army in the final hours of battle, and 150,000 German and Romanian soldiers were able to escape into the Black Sea by boat.
