February 14, 1779: James Cook dies.
Today, 246 years ago, on February 14, 1779 (Calendar 28 December 1778), British navigator James Cook died. James Cook was born in a village in northern England in 1728. At the age of 10, he first sailed by boat. He joined the Royal Navy in 1775 and became a navigation and mapping expert. In 1768, Cook was appointed captain of the Royal Navy Pacific Explorer. During the next 10 years, he led the explorers to conduct three epic journeys, traces across the unknown Pacific Ocean, uncovering the geographic secrets of the largest waters on Earth.
