On January 24, 1981, millions of Polish workers were not at work on Saturday to support the demand for a five-day work week proposed by the Unity Trade Union. A strike initiated by the Unity Trade Union leader, Leh Vavenza, shut down most of the country’s major industrial bases. Even the government radio broadcaster acknowledged that the unity trade union originated in Gdansk and that there were fewer than 20% of workers at work in many factories in Warsaw. This workflow was greater than any time since October 1980, and the government needed stability by the unions to rule out Soviet interference, and this was precisely a government embarrassment.
