Later, a number of mass resistance movements broke out. In 1960, the 15th General Assembly adopted a resolution by the Western Samoa citizens' referendum to decide on its affiliation. In May 1961, the citizens' referendum ended the custody state. In 1962, New Year's Day officially declared independence. Since 1963, June 1 became Independence Day.
