On February 16, 1990, Sam Nujoma was elected president of Namibia.
Today, 35 years ago, on February 16, 1990 (Calendar 21 January 1990), Sam Nujoma was elected President of Namibia after independence. On February 16, 1990, the Constitutional Conference of Namibia, composed of 72 members, unanimously elected Sam-Nujoma President of the People's Organization of Southwest Africa as Independent President of Namibia. At the age of 61, Nujoma was born in Owenboram, northern Namibia, and has served as President of the People's Organization of Southwest Africa since 1960. He delivered a speech at the conference saying that he would exercise his powers in the spirit of national reconciliation. Namibia is the last independent African colony.
