Harley Harley, British astronomer and mathematician (1656.11.8-1742.1.14). In 1673 he entered the Queen's College of Oxford. In 1676 he went to the South Atlantic island of St. Helena to measure the direction of the southern sky stars, completed the southern chart containing 341 stars with precise positions, recorded a Mercury day, and performed a large number of clock observations. In 1678 Halley was elected as a member of the Royal Society and earned a master's degree from the University of Oxford. In 1684, he went to Cambridge to ask Newton to teach the mechanical explanation of planetary movements, inspired by the progress of Harley's studies, Newton expanded his study of astronomy. In 1686 he published the world's first meteorological map containing the prevalent distribution of ocean winds, in 1693 he published the Population Mortality Chart of Breslau City, first examined the relationship between mortality and age, in 1701 he published the geomagnetic maps of the Atlantic and Pacific according to the record of the sea plate, and in 1704 he was promoted to be a professor of geometry at the University of Oxford. In 1705, Harry published the Comet Astronomy Theory, in which he explained the orbits of the 24 comets that appeared in 1337-1698 and he noted that the three comets appeared in 1531, 1607 and 1682, and he predicted that it would reappear in 1758, and this prophecy was confirmed that the comet was also named Harvey (17). In 1616 he designed In August 1682, a bright comet appeared in the sky, visible to the naked eye, with a clearly visible, curved tail pulled behind it. The appearance of the comet attracted the attention of almost all astronomers. At the time, the 26-year-old British astronomer Harry was interested in the comet. He watched and recorded the comet's position and its daily changes in the sky. After a period of observation, he was surprised to find that the comet was not a new Earth visitor but an old friend who seemed to have met. At that time, no one knew that the comet would regularly return near the sun. After Harley had this bold thought, he went with great interest and dedication to the observation and study of the comet. After a lot of observations, research and calculations, he boldly predicted that the Harley was almost fifty years old when he made this prophecy, and if his prophecy was correct, it would still take fifty years to wait. He realized that he could not see the comet return with his own eyes, so he said with a sense of humor and some regret: If the comet did come back in 1758, according to my prophecy, the fair latter probably would not refuse to admit that it was first discovered by an Englishman. More than 10 years after Halley’s death, the first comet to be predicted to return was observed by an amateur astronomer at the end of 1758, and it returned to the Sun in time. Halley’s prophecy in the early 18th century, after more than half a century, was finally confirmed. The comet was named Halley’s comet in his memory. In fact, every return from 240 BC in history has been recorded in our country, and the earliest time may have been the year of the King’s Defeat, that is, 1057 BC. Halley’s comet will return on time every about 76 years. When Halley’s comet returns, a lot of observations can be done on it. The latest return of Halley’s comet was in 1986, and China and other countries have conducted a lot of observations Keywords: January 14, 1742, Harley, British astronomer News raw data sources → https://today.help.bj.cn/show/?id=943 17WorldNews[2025.09.28-08:00] 访问:85
