Today, 29 years ago, on April 21, 1996 (Lunar Calendar 4 March 1996), Chechen leader Dudaev was bombed and killed. On the evening of April 21, 1996, the Russian Air Force, based on a hand-held telephone signal from Chechen opposition leader Dudaev, determined his location, then launched two air-to-ground missiles, and Dudaev was killed on the spot. Dudaev's funeral was held on April 24, 1996, and Zhejan Dudaev was appointed as his successor. Since the outbreak of the Chechen war, Dudaev became a focal figure.
