She was appointed Minister of Education and Culture at the end of World War II and the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta. In 1958, she was imprisoned in 1947 for her active participation in and leadership of the Labour Party's mass campaign against British colonial rule, and was elected as a member of the Assembly, and became the first female member of the Parliament of Malta.
