Today, 124 years ago, on May 11, 1901 (March 23, 1901), the world¡¯s first traffic penalty. On May 11, 1901, members of the American Automobile Club were fined in New Jersey for driving too fast. These drivers violated the ¡°13 km/h speed limit¡± stated during the national cross-country race. Witnesses said their speed reached 48 km/h. When the men stopped at a local hotel for a meal, the police in Morystone fined them with a $10 fine, three drivers and one mechanic on the spot.
