James Cook was born in 1728 in a village in the north of Britain. At the age of 10 he first sailed by boat. He joined the Royal Navy in 1775 and became a navigation and mapping expert. In 1768, Cook was appointed captain of the Royal Navy's Pacific Expedition Corps. Over the next 10 years, he led the expedition to conduct three epic journeys, tracing tracks across the unknown Pacific Ocean, uncovering the geographical secrets of the world's largest waters.
