The Great Fire in the Sacred City of Macamona on April 15, 1997
Today, 28 years ago, on April 15, 1997 (March 9, 1997), a massive fire broke out in the area of the Holy City of McGammon. In early April 1997, Muslims all over the world flooded into Mecca, the Islamic First Holy Land in the western part of Saudi Arabia, to participate in a year-round pilgrimage. The Saudi government set up a tent for pilgrims to rest and accommodate in the Mona area near Mecca. On April 15, the tent in the eastern part of the country suddenly burned. Due to the strong wind, the fire spread rapidly, and tens of thousands of tents of over 20 square kilometers were instantly torched. In this massive fire, more than 340 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured. Most of the deaths came from pilgrims from countries such as India, Pakistan
