Dominica is a volcanic island country in the Caribbean of Latin America. Located in the northeast of the Lesser Antilles, it covers an area of more than 750 square kilometers, and its capital is Roseau. Dominica is Spanish for "Sunday". According to historical records, the day Columbus discovered the island at the end of the 15th century was a Sunday, hence the name. There are about 17,000 people on the island, of whom more than half are black. In addition to blacks, there are Indo-European, Caucasian and Caribbean Indians. Caribbean Indians are the earliest indigenous people in the Caribbean, and now this area has basically disappeared. Only Dominican Island still has thousands of people, living deep in the mountains, with their own administrative system and tribal leaders. The majority of the island residents are Catholic. The official language is English, but most of the residents speak French. The island is densely jungled and dotted with banana orchards. Bananas are the main products on the island, and banana exports account for more than 75% of foreign exchange earnings. In 1492 it became a Spanish colony. In 1496 the Spanish established the cities of St. Dominic on the island, becoming the first permanent residence of European colonists in the Americas. In 1627 it became the British control area. In 1916–1924, the United States exercised military rule over the United States. In 1930, the Trujillo family, backed by the United States, ruled for 30 years until Trujillo was forced to abdicate in August 1960. The Dominican people revolted in the capital of Rosso, defeated by the brutal repression of the British cruiser Tehran. The Dominican people, after a long and relentless struggle, finally acquired “internal autonomy” in 1967 to become the “federation” of Britain, but defense and foreign power remained under British control. In March 1977, the Dominican Parliament passed a resolution calling for full independence and sent a delegation headed by Prime Minister Patrick John to conduct several negotiations with the United Kingdom on independence on 23 March 1978.On 3 November 1978, the Dominican Republic finally declared independence and changed its name to the Dominican Federation.
