Franz Bois in 1906.

On December 22, 1942, Franz Boas, the founder of American anthropology, died at the age of 84.

Boas was born in Germany, where he studied physics. He traveled to Baffin Island and became interested in Eskimo culture. He was in the Pacific Northwest, and made a field trip to the Indians of Quacoterre, which was unprecedented in empirical correctness. In the past, anthropology was mostly studied by theorists sitting in chairs. Boas has been the curator of ethnography at the Museum of American History in New York. Until his death, he was a professor of anthropology at Columbia University. His books include The Mind of the Primitive Man and Race, Language and Culture.
