Zhang Taiyan (1869-1936) was first named Xuecheng, courtesy name Mei Shu, later renamed Jiang, Taiyan, and later renamed Binglin, a native of Yuhang, Zhejiang. He was born in a scholarly family for generations and then fell. He experienced two historical periods, the Reform Movement of 1898 and the bourgeois democratic revolution, and walked through tortuous roads. He was an outstanding bourgeois revolutionary and famous scholar in modern China. Mr. Lu Xun once highly praised his heroic spirit of "when a hero is imprisoned, heaven and earth are also sad in autumn" and his heroic spirit of "being hunted seven times, being imprisoned three times, but his revolutionary ambition will never yield", and he was praised as "the regular model of the later generation" (see Two or Three Things about Mr. Taiyan, Volume VI of Complete Works of Lu Xun). Academically, he has dabbled in a wide range of fields, including Confucian classics, philosophy, literature, linguistics, philology, phonology and logic. He has written a lot all his life, and his words are more difficult to understand than those of ancient Austria. His main works have been compiled by later generations into Zhang's Series, Sequel to Zhang's Series and Three Parts of Zhang's Series. Since 1982, Shanghai People's Publishing House has successively published The Complete Works of Zhang Taiyan, which is rich and known as the encyclopedia of Chinese culture.
