Forest fires broke out in Indonesia on August 30, 1997
Twenty-eight years ago today, on August 30th, 1997 (July 28th, 1997 in the lunar calendar), a forest fire broke out in Indonesia. A villager was helpless when he saw that a forest fire would devour his home. In August, 1997, fires broke out in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia. So far, at least 300,000 hectares of forest land were burned and 271 people were killed. Most of these fires were caused by plantation companies burning wasteland, and Indonesia's worst drought in 50 years this year contributed to the fires. The smoke of forest fires has filled Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries, causing widespread air pollution. Masks sold on the roadside Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir also wears masks to prevent unsanitary air from affecting health baby orangutans fleeing forest fires
