His father, Boris Siders, was a Ukrainian Jewish immigrant who studied psychology and philosophy at Harvard University, followed by William James, and earned four degrees, while his mother earned a doctorate in medicine at Boston University.

At 18, he gave up his pursuit of a graduate degree in mathematics in favor of Harvard Law School, which he gave up again at 21, a year before graduation.

At the age of 21, he was arrested for participating in the socialist May Day * and sentenced to 18 months in prison, which caused a sensation based on his previous social fame. During the interrogation, he said he was an opponent of the First World War and a socialist. Later, he developed his own libertarian philosophy of individual rights and "American social continuity". His parents sent him to a sanatorium, set out to "reform" him, and threatened him with sending him to a mental hospital.
